Fat to Fit @ 57 – Day 27

I have been on vacation since last Friday. As a result, sticking to my diet has been almost impossible. How do you eat salad and chicken breasts when you’re cooking for someone who is eating everything under the sun? Throw in the family barbecue, assorted day trips involving eating in restaurants, a crazy, uncertain schedule, and for me it has been a recipe for diet disaster. I did say at the outset my plan was to be honest about my successes and failures. Well, today’s post is about my failures.

Every morning I wake up and resolve to stick to my eating program. Before you even get halfway through the day, I have fallen off the wagon. When I decide I’m going to have a nice grilled chicken salad for lunch, The Spouse wants pizza. When I decide I am going to eat sensibly, we go to my favorite restaurant for happy hour, which has nothing healthy as part of their happy hour specials. It has been one thing after another. I am convinced I have gained weight as opposed to losing weight. I have gotten a time of exercise, so maybe that has balanced out the horrendous eating. I can only hope that is the case. It looks like I’m going to have to wait until I’m back at work to get back on the diet plan. It is so much easier to stick to a sensible eating program when you’re at work. Of course, I should be eating properly no matter what. Isn’t that really the goal here? I didn’t think this was going to be such a struggle this week. I think a big factor has been that I’ve been working so hard outside that I have needed to give up controlling my food intake as a reward. Dumb!

So, the plan for today is to at least do better than I have been all week. I say that as I sit here waiting to go into the grocery store to buy donuts and bagels and various other breakfast foods to feed the workers are putting new flooring in my house. I will make sure to buy things I don’t like. Let’s hope today is a better day.

Fat to Fit @ 57 – Day 15

The last couple of days have been a real struggle. My subconscious has been doing a lot of talking. Actually, more like nagging. ACTUALLY, more like peptalking. I have been faced with a lot of temptations, and it is taking a lot of cheerleading by my subconscious to keep me on the straight and narrow. Her typical encouragement goes something like this: “Come on, Gina! You can do this. You do not need to eat that. Come on! Just do it.” it seems to be helping.

This morning, we stopped at Starbucks. Laid out before me was an array of muffins, scones (my favorite), and very delicious looking pastries. It was all I could do to pick up a fruit cup instead. And for my drink I had a dry cappuccino. Round one – me!

We went down to watch the Coeur d’Alene Ironman this morning. We got there at 4 AM. The race didn’t start until 6:15 AM. So we walked around a lot checking things out. That’s when we went into the Starbucks. After we got our drinks from Starbucks, we went back to where we planned to sit to watch the swim. We sat and visited with the other people that had begun to gather there to watch the swim as well. It was fun. But it got really cold. We watched all of the pros finish, and a good portion of the age group competitors. Then we headed off to warm up and find some breakfast.

We ended up at Shari’s. I knew this was going to be a tough one. My favorite meal to eat out is breakfast. I love bacon and eggs and hashed browns and toast. Clearly, I was going to need a lot of cheerleading in order to avoid temptation. I scanned the menu, and saw that I could get fruit instead of hashed browns and toast with anything I wanted. The “low cal” omelette did not sound very tempting at all. So I went with a spinach, ham, and mushroom omelette with fruit. I have to say, I felt a little gypped when they brought in my plate and I saw that I had traded in hashed brown potatoes and toast for maybe half a cup of honeydew melon. I think if I’m going to give up
hashed browns AND toast I should get a double portion of fruit. Oh well.

So, while The Spouse and Oldest Son had chicken fried steak, pancakes, eggs, and hashed browns, I had my veggie omelette and fruit. It was pretty good. And I sure felt better about myself when I finished. I will confess to having a couple of bites of hashed browns, but I don’t think those will derail my diet.

We only got three hours of sleep last night. So when we got home from watching the race, I headed in for little nap. Unfortunately, the dogs had other ideas. I finally got up after tossing and turning for half an hour, and I was starving. Not physically starving, mentally starving. I drank some water, and had a few bites of a grilled chicken breast that I had cooked yesterday. Proteins always seems to do the trick. Also, thankfully, there are no snacks in the house. I don’t know if I could’ve resisted a handful of nuts if we had had any in the house.

Dinner will be a big salad and some chicken breast or tri-tip, lots of water, and a glass of wine. I just want to make it through today without cheating. Tomorrow should show some pretty good results on the scale.

Fat to Fit @ 57 – Day 11

My, how time flies! The weekend was hectic, resulting in an obvious lack of blogging activity. Saturday was filled with yard work, in a desperate attempt to tame the wild jungle our yard had become, thanks to yet more rain, making mowing impossible. The upside to a day full of yard work is that I a) walk an awful lot and b) don’t have many opportunities for mindless eating. My subconscious, generally preferring to sit curled up with a good book on a dreary weekend, was actually cheering at the forced exercise and caloric restrictions imposed upon me. By day’s end, I had to agree that it had been a good thing, as I had logged over 15,000 steps.

Sunday was Father’s Day. It began by having breakfast with The Daughter, her husband, and the awesome Granddaughter 2 and Grandson. We went to a local waterfront restaurant. Unbeknownst to us, they were having a Father’s Day brunch buffet. We had expected their daily menu, so it was a pleasant surprise. Since I’m doing HCG, and I was in the loading phase, I could eat anything I wanted. They had peel-and-eat shrimp, lox and bagels, made-to-order omelets, potatoes, bacon, sausages, and lots of fruits and veggies. I started off with lox and bagels, shrimp, some fresh fruit, bacon (of course!!), and some potatoes. I wasn’t really that hungry. I went back up for an omelet, and while I was standing there, they brought back an “everything” omelet they had made by mistake. I told them I’d take it, got a couple more pieces of bacon, and a huckleberry bar (like a lemon bar, but made with huckleberries). The omelet was delicious! It had feta (my favorite!), spinach, tons of other veggies, and sausage in it. The huckleberry bar was disappointing. Though there were other sweets there, none of them appealed to me. After breakfast, The Spouse and I walked along the bike path/sidewalk that circles the beach, then headed south to meet up with YS and his girlfriend.

We had some stops to make in our attempt to find a replacement flap for the doggie door. It’s hanging on by a thread. YS and his girlfriend met us at the hardware store we were headed to. No flaps. We decided to go to lunch at Chili’s to celebrate Father’s Day again. They have a salad I love – the Quesadilla Explosion Salad. That’s what I had. Remember, loading day… 🙂 I was STUFFED afterwards. A quick trip to Costco to get some necessary items, then the hour drive home. We had done a lot of walking, including a stop at Home Depot in search of the flap. By the time we got home, I had clocked almost 12,000 steps!

Monday was another rainy day, and the first day of Phase 2 of the HCG diet. There is an 800 calorie protocol, which is what I’m doing. It is easier to stick to, and you lose just as much. The astonishing thing was, when I weighed in on Monday, after loading all weekend, I had LOST 2 pounds! My subconscious was jumping for joy!  I hate rainy days, because it means no walk at lunch. My step count was pretty dismal. I did okay with eating, although I did find myself picking at some nuts that are verboten. It takes me a couple of days to get in the groove when I start this program.

Tuesday we made it to the gym! I did 15 minutes on this new elliptical trainer we got at the gym. It’s quite different than the one I usually use. You feel as though you are climbing constantly. I managed only a little over a mile in that 15 minutes, as opposed to almost double that on the other one. Then I did a leg workout, which was great. My knees are feeling better, little by little. I didn’t get to walk at lunch due to a conference call that was scheduled when I usually walk. Bummer. I still managed 7500 steps, though.

Today I got to ride my bike to work!! Yay! It is always the highlight of my day! That is in addition to doing a chest and back workout at the gym this morning. I am such a weakling, but I’m getting stronger daily. I was down a pound today, too. That’s 3 pounds since Friday. I had planned on walking at lunch, but had a mini emergency, which required me to leave work early and ride back home to get my car. I thought I was going to be driving south to get YS’s car towed to the mechanic because it wouldn’t start and he was stuck working. Fortunately, on his lunch break, he got his car started, and decided to take his chances that it would start when he got off (it did). So, I drove back to work, missed my lunch walk AGAIN, but at least I got to ride. I’ll take the Fluffs for a walk when I get home tonight to make up, at least partially, for my missed walk. So far, I’ve logged 6700 steps. I really want to get to 10,000 today in addition to my rides. Can’t wait to see the scale tomorrow! My subconscious hasn’t yelled at me for a couple of days. Yay!

Oh, and I know wine isn’t on the diet, but I had some last night, and lost a pound today, so I’m adding a glass to my nightly regimen. What can it hurt, right?

 

Fat to Fit @ 57 – Days Five & Six

Yesterday was a busy day, and before I knew it, it was over, and I’d failed to blog. That probably is no big deal to most of you – my 5 or 6 readers – but it is a big deal to me, because I had promised myself, as part of my fitness regimen, to post daily. Fifty lashes with an uncooked piece of spaghetti should be sufficient punishment for my first transgression, don’t you think?

Day Five was actually a pretty decent day. I went to the gym and did a chest and back workout. Wow, I am SO weak compared to what i used to be able to lift. This is going to take some doing! It was also nice enough that my coworker and I managed our 2.3 mile walk at lunch. I wanted to take the dogs for a walk when I got home, but I had stayed an hour late to help a patron, so it was too late by the time I got home.

I did pretty well with my eating – not counting the piece of baby shower cake I had. A girl has to indulge every now and then, right? I didn’t eat chips or Cheetos, or even any Ritz crackers when I got home. I did, however, have a plate of spaghetti with a very tasty marinara sauce and a couple of pieces of French bread. For dessert we had fresh strawberries and lite whipped cream. It was not a bad day.

But the highlight of my day occurred when I was called out to talk to one of my favorite patrons. She and her husband are filmmakers who come in and use the special computers with professional film editing software that we have set aside for our local filmmaking community. They come in spurts, often for weeks in a row, then we don’t see them for a few months. I hadn’t seen her since the end of last year. When I walked out and saw her, the first thing I thought was, “holy cow! Ms. Skinny Bones Jones!!” She gave me a hug and I asked, “what have you been doing? You look fantastic!” She just beamed. I had never known her to wear makeup, but she was sporting a hint of eyeliner, mascara, and maybe even some blush. She looked amazing! She shared that she has lost over 50 pounds! When I asked how, she told me she’d been doing the HCG diet. Of course! I told her that I had lost 28 pounds on it, and had kept off all but 5 pounds until early this year, when another 15 crept back on. I bemoaned the difficulty I’d been having getting back on the program. She acknowledged that she had had the same difficulty starting subsequent rounds, until her husband came home from a filmmaking gig in California and joined her on the program. He has lost over 25 pounds. They are just getting ready to do another round because she wants to lose another 20 pounds. Interestingly, I had ordered some HCG and had planned to start today, but was still having a hard time “flipping the switch” that has to flip in order to stick to any program. Well, she has motivated me big time! I told her about my walking regimen, and she is going to join us beginning Tuesday, weather permitting. We’re going to have a regular cadre of lunchtime walkers!

Today is my 31st wedding anniversary. I rode my bike to work and back this morning in the glorious sun, went for a 3 mile walk at lunch, and my HCG came in! The first two days on the diet are loading days. You eat as much as you possibly can. Good thing, since there was still a lot of baby shower cake at work, and The Spouse and I are going to dinner tonight. I can indulge! I had two pieces of cake, and a healthy smoothie my coworker/walking partner brought to work for me. Tonight at dinner, I am going to splurge, because after tomorrow, it’s back to 500 calorie days eating spinach, chicken breast and apples. I really don’t mind the HCG plan, and I lost quickly, so it’s very motivating. But I have so much delicious food in the house, it is going to be a real chore to try to eat it all before Sunday! 🙂 Okay…I’m not REALLY going to eat it ALL. I’ll save some for The Spouse.

Have a very nice Friday evening! I’m enjoying a delicious glass of Barefoot Zinfandel while I blog, and correct the Runkeeper map of my bike ride home. It had me going 7 miles, when the route is not even 6 miles long. The GPS readings have me hopping fences and jumping from one street to another in a few seconds. It would be nice to think I’d ridden over 16MPH average speed all the way home, but I know better. And if you look at the map, it looks like I was drunk or high, zig-zagging all over the place. Silly Runkeeper!

The good news today is, my subconscious has not yelled at me once today!
